burglar

If ever the old saying, an Englishman’s home is his castle, needed proof, then the person who steals from it provides it. Burglar ultimately derives from the Latin verb burgare, “break open”, from burgus, “fortress, castle”, itself borrowed from a Germanic source. One can imagine that breaking into a medieval castle was far more difficult and risky than climbing in through a kitchen window.
