brand
You might think that you could get your fingers burnt if you bought something second hand and not brand new. However, the opposite is the case. If it’s brand new, you’re sure to get your fingers burnt, as it’s literally come straight out of the fire (think of “firebrand”). A brand in the modern sense of a make or trade-mark comes from the idea of branding something with a hot iron to show its provenance, just like branding farm animals to prove ownership.
